2023 Derthona Timorasso DOC
Derthona represents the highest expression of the Timorasso grape variety in its place of origin. The name itself evokes the link with the land: "Derthona" is the ancient Latin name for the city of Tortona, the urban center and heart of the four valleys that have always cultivated this rare and precious grape variety.
Already cultivated in the Middle Ages, Timorasso is the oldest and rarest native white grape variety in Piedmont, as well as one of the few capable of yielding great white wines for long aging.
A grape variety with a delicate but strongly identifying nature, Timorasso fully reveals its complexity after several months of aging in the bottle.
In the first few years, the aromatic profile is distinguished by fruity notes of white peach, acacia flowers, hawthorn, cotton candy and honey.
With aging-after three to four years-the typical mineral and hydrocarbon nuances emerge with greater definition, giving depth and character.
Viberti Giovanni's vineyards are located in the town of Monleale, a historic medieval stronghold and a key player in the Timorasso Renaissance in the 1980s, thanks to the vision and determination of young winemaker Walter Massa.
The 9.5 hectares of vineyards extend in the upper part of the village, at an altitude of 400 meters, along the road that connects Monleale to the municipality of Montemarzino. The exposures, from east to southeast, ensure balanced ripening, while the soils, light and clayey with a good presence of limestone, provide an ideal habitat for Timorasso.
The micro-area traced by the road through Val Curone is distinguished by unique pedoclimatic characteristics, capable of giving the grapes extraordinary expressiveness and complexity.
The result is wines that are long-lived, intense, and of rare elegance. - Viberti, Winery.
