Ah yes, we thought it was a fad! The grand seltzer fad of 2019! In 2019 alone, interest in seltzer went up a mere 992%. Yes you read that correctly. That’s not a typo. What?! Naturally, everyone jumped on board that algorithm train, however the results led to anything but a shooting star trend. It ain’t all White Claw. Like a lot of things that start out being a little bit “trendy” (relevantly read: natural wine), the ascension of quality, types and certified FUN that can be attained after drinking one, made sure it was here to stay. And aren’t we here for it! Hard seltzers can satisfy such a wild and wide slew of drinkers, and they’re being made by some of the craftiest and established breweries and upstarts around. Love fruity pet nat? Try a peach and citrus seltzer. Love broody vermouth with a hint of soda? How about an acai berry or local plum seltzer. Need a roadie for a quick beach swim? Take a seltzer. These low alcohol, low sugar, fruit brewed fizzers are an imbibers quick delight. How are they made? Well, hard seltzers start with the fermentation of malted grains and fruits or, in most cases, cane sugars. Then the mash is infused or steeped with botanicals, much like fruit beers. It is no secret that lovers of booze also love sparkling water, and flavoured fizz is a natural next step, don’t you think? They can be a little nod at nostalgia – a healthier, cooler alternative to our youths smashing UDLs and Ruskis in the sunset with Phoenix playing in the background, a summer crush walking past. Or they can be a tip of the hat to your interest in local botanicals and experimentation – so many Australian breweries have flexed their creativity in this area.
