Marsanne and Roussanne, often shunned for being too round and oily, though true believers know where to find it. When it’s like this - woven from the most talented of winemakers and sourced from the best sites, it’s as though you’re understanding honey like a bee does - a life force. This year the Marsanne comes from the same vineyard as the Syrah. There is also a fair dollop of Roussanne in the blend, from the same site. Grapes were picked fully ripe, pressed hard, and sent straight to barrel, malolactic was left to happen naturally. After twelve months in cask, the wine was racked to tank for an additional ten months before being bottled at the start of February 2023. A long wait, but those who seek textural wines won’t forget this anytime soon. Place of Changing Winds is Rob Walter’s new project. Walter’s is a famed wine journalist and importer (Bibendum) but was always on the lookout for a place to settle and grow some fruit of his own. Michael Dillon of Bindi Wines eventually found the site for him. Based in the Macedon Ranges, the project is mostly Burgundian in ethos; close planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. However, there’s smatterings of Syrah and Marsanne nearby in Heathcote, which are also put to great use.
