Modern West: A Masterclass with Owen Latta
There's a stretch of Victoria's goldfields, on high volcanic ground north of Ballarat, that quietly turns out some of the country’s most thrilling cool-climate wine. At the centre of it is Owen Latta, a second-generation winemaker who oversaw his first full vintage before he'd turned sixteen, and who's spent the years since building two labels that feel like two sides of the same restless brain.
Eastern Peake is the family estate: serious, site-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grown on weathered basalt at 430 metres, farmed organically and made with a deliberately light hand. Latta Vino is where he lets loose: a négociant project chasing alternative varieties and lo-fi, low-and-no-sulphur expressions from the lesser-known corners of Western and Central Victoria. One label honours the place he grew up; the other pokes and prods at what that place can become.
We’re thrilled to have Owen himself pouring wines from both labels for a masterclass on the modern face of Western Victorian wine. Expect proper depth, a few wines you won't have tasted elsewhere, and a winemaker who's refreshingly honest about the lot.
Heritage or havoc? Happily, you don't have to choose.
