For the wine nerds. This is the kind of wine God drinks from a glass made of clouds. The tiny vineyard of Japanese-born Rié and Hiro sits at the top of the world in Collioure, Côtes Catalanes. The energy is electric but the climate often violent, with fierce wind and sweeping aridity. The flip side is there’s no frost and almost no disease! This cuvée is mostly Grenache from head-pruned bush vines. The grapes were fermented as whole bunches in cuve for around a month then pressed and fed by gravity into old foudres. For 2022, again, Hiro has extended elevage to 18 months which has rendered a fabulous wine in every sense. Aromas of perfumed black fruit, flowers, graphite and minerals lead into an ethereal palate of lace and wonder. Mountain wine at its finest.
