Grenache has really been jumping into my repertoire of influential drinking, Im definitely not alone here, producers such as old vine Gramenon, Predres Blanques, Bruno Duchêne, Eric Pfifferling just to name a few have all been shaping my interest, they all have such a fine focus on growing excellent grapes with the best farming practice to produce some very fine exciting cuveés. As I’ve probably mentioned many times before Shays Flat is the spiritual home of the Latta label, the site is so distinct & so well suited to the varieties planted there. Its located on the Western end of the Victorian Pyrenees ranges, deep in the Landsborough Valley sitting at 350m above sea level on an east facing ridge with the southern foothills of the valley making way for a natural amphitheatre. Grown right on the same block as the Sangiovese on deep red soils containing a mixture of shattered quartz, schist, ironstone & rich clays. Cool nights from the continental climate allow a long ripening period holding perfect acidity, gentle sugar development & complex flavour profiles build up until the optimum harvest date. The whole idea here is just to produce a delicious red wine that speaks of Grenache hugely influenced by the beautiful Shays Flat site I’m so familiar with. 30% whole bunches in open concrete fermenters, one pump over per day a very gentle approach, indigenous yeasts, basket pressed after 12 days, élevage for 12 months in 500L Casks 20% new, estate bottled after 3 months in tank with a small amount of sulphur.
