It is a full bodied, powerful wine that is fruit driven with a floral lift, along with spice, game meat and alpine herb characters. The acidity, fruit profile and tannin all sit very nicely together leaving a lasting impression. 10 acres were planted incrementally, beginning in 2000 by the former owner who was inspired by the Swiss-Italian immigrants of the region. The vineyard was then purchased by Julie and Peter Kent in 2018 and they created their label Mafic. They have a strong appreciation for the area and are refining the way the property is farmed. The vineyard sits near the foothills of Lalgambrook (Mt Franklin) on rich dark volcanic soil. Handpicked on the 10th of April. Back at the winery we de-stemmed all of the grapes and they were fermented on skins for 3 weeks. The grapes were then basket pressed and the wine was transferred to barrel. – Chris Dilworth & Loique Allain, Winemakers.
