There’s something glamorous about Sangiovese, its red kissed aromatics lifted with leather, mocha, spice. Chianti is most ubiquitous but Brunello is for purists, one of Italy’s oldest DOCG’s and the home of some of the most spellbinding examples of Sangiovese. Those who chase Nebbiolo around the planet oft fall for Sangiovese’s charms too, and this wine here from the Padovani sisters of Fonterenza, is certainly one you won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

The sisters have around 4.2 hectares in the hills near Poggio San Polo, the southeastern part of the Montalcino zone. Their farming is certified biodynamic, the work painstakingly manual; harvest is always by hand. Their Brunello comes from a mere hectare's worth of fruit from their prized 'Vigna del Bosco' parcel, a site they planted themselves in 2000. (It's is surrounded entirely by the woods, or 'bosco.') The 2013 Brunello spent six years in a 2500L botte and is a concentrated, complex wine: riserva-level in character and beyond riserva in its ageing process.
