The 2022 growing season started with some frost in the Huon, however the team was out in force burning fires on those frosty nights to mitigate as much damage as we could, we were successful and had little damage. The 2022 growing season started with some frost in the Huon, however the team was out in force burning fires on those frosty nights to mitigate as much damage as we could, we were successful and had little damage. The flowering of the grapes were good in both Huon and Derwent vineyards, the summer was moderate, not too much rain but more than average. The harvest period provided great weather conditions with little rain, this resulted in ripe fruit in pristine condition. The wine is a blend of the two sites, the soil types vary from Huon cobble stones with white clay to Derwent soil which is red clay over gravely chalk deposits. This vintage is very special to me I am very happy with the quality of my fourth release wines of 2022.

The 2022 Chardonnay is a mix of 40% Huon Valley and 60% Derwent Valley, from Estate Lubiana family vineyards, hand picked and hand sorted the grapes were whole bunch pressed to 228L French oak barrels with 15% new oak, the ferment was wild and slow, malolactic fermentation was carried out in Spring and the wine remained on full lees for 11 months. The wine was carefully racked out of barrel in February 2023 and bottled in June 2023 without filtration. The wine has a powerful nose, which to me has a mix of lemon meringue, flint, oak spice, hazelnuts and toast, the acid line is long and taut but balanced out by a rich and smooth texture. The wine is drinking deliciously well now but it will continue to improve with age.
