At the ripe old age of 23, Juan Antonio Ponce (pronounced pon-thay) left a coveted position in the winemaking team of Spanish giant Telmo Rodriguez, to found Bodegas Ponce in the region of Manchuela. More than a decade later, Ponce wines have become emblematic of a new philosophy in Spanish wine: biodynamically and organically farmed, focused on representation of terroir and heavily influenced by the natural wine movement in France. La Estrecha is a single parcel of very old vines planted at high density on red clay and limestone, at around 700 metres above sea level. Sitting on a narrow slope between the forest and the larger, slightly younger vineyard La Casilla, these vines produce Ponce’s most sought-after wine.
There’s an intense black cherry and plum front palate, with Rhone-like characters of tar, olive and dried meat, which provide complexity and depth. The firm, powerful tannin structure suggest that La Estrecha is set up to age. - Alimentaria, Importer.
