Sourced from 40 year old Zweigelt vines. Grown organically on a combination of loess and gravel. Labelled as 'Espere', the old village name of Etsdorf Am Kamp where the Warnung family are based. Celebrating provenance in lieu of the constraints surrounding Austrian wine law, whilst maintaining the hallmark characters of the region. Sourced from 40 year old Zweigelt vines. Grown organically on a combination of loess and gravel. Labelled as 'Espere', the old village name of Etsdorf Am Kamp where the Warnung family are based. Celebrating provenance in lieu of the constraints surrounding Austrian wine law, whilst maintaining the hallmark characters of the region. Hand harvested and wild fermented as wholebunches with occasional punchdowns to result in a semi-carbonic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The resulting wine is left in contact with the skins for about 14 days. It is pressed off the skins and returned to the same tank for 1 year of maturation and an additional year in large format old oak. Bottled unfined & unfiltered.
Born and raised at his family’s tiny winery in Kamptal, surrounded by picturesque vines clinging to steep terraces along the river, Matthias Warnung fell in love with winemaking from a young age. Before founding his eponymous winery, Matthias honed his craft around the world, most notably with famed natural winemakers Craig Hawkins of Testalonga in South Africa and Tom Lubbe of Matassa in France’s Roussillon region. He learnt that great wines start in the vineyard, offering real reflections of their terroir, the personality of place, and the nuances of the grapes. Matthias farms his fruit organically and employs natural ferments with as little intervention as possible. The resulting wines are pure and powerful, expressive and energetic.
