Gamay from the Northern Rhône? Perhaps this is the perfect antidote for those who are a bit washed out from all of the Beaujolais we have seen flood our shores in the last few years.

The Domaine Romaneaux-Destezet began in 1993 by Hervé Souhaut. His holdings on the acidic granite soils of the northern Rhône and southern Ardèche hold vines that date pre-phylloxera — from 50 to100 years old. Hervé's holdings are so small, under nine hectares, yet all of them produce such commanding wines. He also produces wines under a Vin de Pays label, helping manage an additional twenty or so hectares. There is a perfume to his wines that is utterly intoxicating, they really are captivating cult wines.

La Souteronne is made from Gamay - the vines are between 70 to 90 years old. This is, like the Syrah, truly superb - floral, fruit driven Gamay with an edgy mountain freshness and an attractive Rhône accent that gives it an incisive, meaty drive. It has an exquisite aroma, is luscious, crunchy and incredibly moreish - a desert island wine for me and very popular, so be quick! - Andrew Guard, Importer.
