Made by Melly Barajas at her tiny distillery in Valle de Guadalupe, La Gritona Reposado is crafted from 10 year-old blue agave grown in the iron-rich red soil of the Jalisco highlands. The agave is steam cooked in one thick-walled earthen oven before crushing, natural fermentation & double distillation. Melly then rests her distilled silver in reused American whiskey barrels for 8 months. Every step of production is worked by a group of local women. The bottles are hand blown locally with recycled Mexican glass. All of the agave remnants left over after production are given to local farmers to use as cattle feed. Herbaceous and vegetal, this special tequila isn’t really comparable with other reposados. It captures the true essence of the plant from which it was distilled, whilst expressing subtle signs of Melly’s deliberate, careful aging. The finish is epically round with no burn. Best enjoyed straight — with no ice, lime, salt, or mixer.
