2023 Grüner Veltliner – The K1 Vineyard
Grüner Veltliner harvested on 31st March and hand-made at CRFT Carey Gully winery. Whole-bunch pressed to tank to begin full solids wild ferment. Part-way through ferment half of the batch was transferred into oak for full solids wild fermentation in older seasoned (neutral) French barriques. The balance was wild fermented on full solids in tank. Grape vines in their youth battle for their place on the earth. Water, soil and sun is hotly contested until they each establish their territory. Young vines can often be overly ambitious and unbalanced, but as come of age, their canopies fill out, bunches become consistent and vineyard flavour becomes more distinct. The K1 vineyard is home to one of the oldest plantings of Grüner In the country, whilst 2008 may seem recent, these are old vines In an Australian Grüner context. The wine has a confidence, strength and power that only comes from wine grown from a well establish vineyard. The colour is bright green with a touch of shiny gold. Limes, nectar and floral honey on the nose lead to a full rich palate of vanilla, short bread and the white bit of a strawberry. - Candice Helbig and Frewin Ries, Winemakers.
