"The neco series are from Reina the wife of winemaker Hirotake – she is crazy about cats. 'Anco' is one of Al Fiore’s most popular cuvees every year made using skin contact Delaware. The 2019 harvest saw the Delaware picked just before fully ripe due to the influence of rain. Grapes were then de-stemmed where they spent 6 days on skins before being aged for another 6 months in amphora. A savoury nose with white plums, preserved lemons and apricot. Quite sleek with a more elevated energy than the more substantial 2018 vintage. As always with Al Fiore’s skin contact whites, this has a lovely saline finish and beautiful, effortless acidity. Natural yeast, no filtration, no-SO2.
Koshu, Delaware, and Muscat A Baily. Al Fiore meaning ‘single flower’ in Japanese is named after Hirotaka’s former restaurant. The winery is operated by Hirotaka and his wife Reina supported by a small team who produce around 15,000 bottles per year. As expected with all things Japanese, each wine is made with precision and care. With grapes both difficult to source and grow, every grape must be treated with respect. Each bottle number is hand written and dyed using persimmon fruit. As grapes are difficult to grow in the region, Reina and Hirotaka predominantly source their grapes from neighbouring regions like Yamagata and Yamanashi, home of Koshu grape. In 2014 they began planting their own vines with the dream to harvest and produce wines purely from their own crop. We’re all hoping to see this come to fruition in 2021. Their wines are made up of both vinifera and labrusca grapes, commonly known as hybrid / table grapes. Varieties include Delaware, Steuben, and Niagara which bring an alluring perfume of ripe fruits and flowers unlike no other. They are extremely delicate wines, matching perfectly with the subtle flavours of Japanese cuisine. Reina & Hirotaka make their wines as naturally as possible. There are no additives used, no fining or filtration either. Production is extremely small." – Importer notes
