A captivating Champagne. Expressive, precise, lifted. Gautherot's first cuvée is Fidèle, a Blanc de Noirs (100% Pinot Noir) that is grown in Kimmeridgian-limestone soils. Mostly from a single vintage yet a small portion of reserve wine (from a perpetual blend started in 2001 and stored in a giant old foudre) hides in the mix, providing historical context and power. The Fonnet vineyard provides the "heart" of this cuvée and the nearby lieux-dit of Biaunes provides the balance. The vines for this wine average 30 years and Gautherot keeps the yields particularly low, though the vineyard tends to produce a small amount of fruit as is. Small, but mighty. Following pressing in a traditional, vertical Coquard press, "I like the delicacy and oxidation it brings", says Gautherot, Fidèle is vinified entirely - without added yeast or chapitalisation - in used Burgundian barrels for ten months. Gautherot describes this as, "a dangerous wine," as it is so damn easy to drink. So gorgeous.
