Songs from Mars - 2019 Black Sallad

Golden-orange in hue, this wine is spicy, slatey, floral, fruity, juicy, mineral, herby and downright delicious. Crafted by Californian winemaking superstar Matthew Rorick (of Forlorn Hope), working alongside buddy Jaysen Collins (Massena Wines) in the alien land of the Barossa. A ludicrously limited seasonal release.

"A field blend from an 80 year old mixed planting at the Stonegarden Vineyard in Eden Valley (Muscat, Riesling, Crouchen, and Verdelho, with small amounts of Sauvignon blanc and a Mataro vine or two). Originally planted in 1855, the soils consist of a thin loam top layer over red clay shot through with quartz and mica schist. Now farmed organically by owner Glenn Monaghan, we are honoured to be able to work with fruit from a site with roots deep in Eden Valley’s viticultural heritage. Hand picked, destemmed, and fermented on its skins in an open-top vat for five days ... basket pressed down to 300L barrique, where it finished fermentation and rested for 10 months. Fermentation was achieved with native yeast, and no additions save minimal effective SO2 were added. Bottled unfined and unfiltered." – Songs From Mars
