2018 Ciro Rosso DOC
100% Gaglioppo, an ancient native variety, from ‘vigneto Franza’ in Contrada Franza, land that has been in the Scala family since the 17th century. This rosso might be light in colour (characteristic of Gaglioppo) but it's BIG in tannins, so at Scala they age they wine for two years in big underground cement tanks. The nose is a little wild, exuding berry fruits and florals, plus spices, meat, cranberries, plums, leather and liquorice. In the mouth, it's medium bodied with a sweet core of fruit and dusty tannins. Perfect food wine. We repeat: perfect food wine.
Some fun facts: Calabria is located at the ‘toe’ of the Italian peninsula, and Cirò is Calabria’s best known wine region. The town of Cirò was one of the original Greek settlements and the site of the earliest Olympic games, where an ancient version of Cirò wine was given to the winners as a prize. Here, Gaglioppo is king. One of Italy’s oldest varieties, recent DNA studies have found that Gaglioppo is a natural crossing of Sangiovese and Mantonico. It's quickly taking centre stage and might just be the next Nerello!
