2019 Sivi PG
Hey Sivi, take me on a journey...
This Pinot Grigio is a stunning entry into the ikonic world of Radikon, and into the world of orange wine at large. With each sip, you weave your way through a tapestry of flavours and textures, across undulating threads of candied fruit, tangerine and spice. Lovely tannicity adds savoury structure, with high acidity conjuring immense freshness. The pink/orange hue is pretty as a picture. Grapes were destemmed and wild fermented on skins for 12 days with no temperature control. After a gentle pressing, the wine is aged in Slavonian oak barrels for a year and a half on its lees, before being bottled unfiltered and unsulphured.
While ‘natural’ ‘orange’ wine dates back to 3000BC in Georgia, Radikon pioneered its reincarnation. In Oslavje, Friuli, the late Stanilaus (‘Stanko’) Radikon brought back ancestral methods in the ‘Slovenian’ style – hand-harvesting, extended skin maceration, large, older barrel fermentations without temperature control, no added yeasts or enzymes and no use of sulphur. Now run by son Saša, Radikon is cult status stuff renowned for its complexity, high ageing potential and deep, wild flavours.
