Poppelvej - 2020 'Dancing in the Doldrums' Pinot Meunier
Uffe is a great wine maker. Thankfully, he fell in love with a woman from Mclaren Vale, who is also a great wine maker. Together, they use fruit from all over South Australia to summon wines that are compelling, interesting and just darn tasty. 'Poppelvej' refers to Uffe's hometown in Denmark, meaning 'street lined with poplar trees'.
This particular cuvee, named after a Led Zep song, is handpicked Pinot Meunier from Summertown in the Adelaide Hills and farmed without the use of systemic nor synthetic chemical inputs. Fermented wild as 100% wholebunch & foot-stomped once daily for the first 5 days of ferment. The resulting wine was pressed direct to neutral oak and remained on full solids for 5 months where battonage occurred once monthly.
Like opening up a spice cupboard at Christmas time, cherry kissed, structural, more-ish. A delight.
