2018 Pitti Red
'Pitti' is crafted with the indigenous red varieties Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, supported by some Merlot. The fruit is grown on black soils around Heideboden, and the wine spends 12 months in stainless steel. Fullness and juiciness comes from the Zweigelt, spiciness from the Blaufränkisch and structure from the Merlot. Dark ruby in colour, the wine has tight tannins with black berries, cherries, cranberries and fresh acid ribcage. Whispers of tobacco and liquorice. Ticks all the boxes of quality, drinkability and affordability. And yumability.
Austrian trailblazer Gerhard Pittnauer was only 18 when he took over family vines in the early ‘80s after his father’s unexpected death. He set forth to ‘grow’ wine rather than ‘make’ it in the cellar. Today, he and his wife tend 15ha of vines biodynamically in Burgenland. Everything is done manually and wines are fermented naturally with minimal input.
