2020 Rosso Giulietta
Pelaverga is Piedmont’s answer to Pineau d’Aunis, scrummy and light with flourishes of herbs. The majority of the fruit here comes from Olek’s Roncagliette vineyard in Barbaresco which has wonderful exposure to sunlight and cools off in the evenings. The fruit spends a week or so on skins, before being pressed off to rest for a year in a tank. So much wild strawberries, good balsamic, watermelon and lavender. We love to see more and more of these local varieties being brought out of obscurity for celebratory wines such as this.
Olek Bondonio’s winery resides in an old farmhouse named ‘La Berchialla’ which sits amongst Barbaresco’s most famous sites, held by his family for almost 200 years. It was a natural movement to winemaking for Olek, spending his summers in the farmhouse, watching the vineyard workers with intent, then disappearing for the winters to snowboard. Everything he makes speaks of place and purpose, they are non-conforming and sit outside what one may expect from Barbaresco’s most prestigious fruit. One must be patient with his wines, they are delicate and ethereal.
