It is made from indigenous grapes macerated on the skins and expresses aromas of fruit, citrus, aromatic and balsamic herbs and an expressive, traditional and direct taste. Wine made with old style artisanal methods
SP68 Bianco Arianna Occhipinti, Biodynamic white wine, blend of Muscat and Albanella, light, exotically fruity and elegant. This wine is named after the main road that passes near to Arianna’s home town of Vittoria, it lies in the far south of Sicily just to the west of Ragusa. It is here that she has been making wine for the past ten years under the tutelage of her uncle, Giusto Occhipinti who owns and runs the famous COS estate. The nose offers notes of white flowers, pink grapefruit, lychee, fresh oregano, and spice. It’s a deeply aromatic wine that is surprisingly light on the palate. There’s some maceration on the skins, so you’ll get a bit of tannin on the finish along with an intriguing olive-y note. Great with all manner of seafood dishes but try with some Octopus salad, superb!
Arianna Occhipinti is the niece of COS winemaker Guisto Occhipinti, so has winemaking in her blood. Her estate lies near to Vittoria, just off the SP68 road which lends its name to some of her wines. Guided by her uncle, she's been making wine here for well over ten years now. All the vineyards are worked using biodynamic principals and she takes a non-interventionalist approach in the cellar, allowing the wine to find its own space. Only natural yeasts are used, no temperature control, no fining or filtration and minimal SO2 at bottling. Many would say Arianna is now rivalling her Uncle for quality and certainly her wines are excellent. She works with Nero d'Avola, Frappato, Zibbibo, as well as some other local varieties.
Arianna Occhipinti is one of the hottest names in Italian wines. Her natural wines are highly sought after with the demand far outstrip- ping the tiny production. Great Roman wine lists like Casa Bleve, Settembrini & Enoteca Costantini are fervent supporters of her great wines. The estate is about 15 km from the Mediterranean with the vineyards planted at 250 metres above sea level. The vineyard is planted to Frappato & Nero d'Avola and is run on bio-dynamic principles and all fruit is hand harvested. The winemaking process is natural with fermentation occurring spontaneously, no temperature control, no fining, no filtration and only minimal sulphur additions at bottling. The style of Occhipinti is fresh and pure with incredibly cool fruit. The wines are delicate yet full flavoured and glide across the palate.
