In Gleinsätten, South Styria, the tiny 5ha mountain vineyard of Karl and Eva Schnabel has been certified biodynamic since 2003. It’s never been tractored or sprayed with chemicals – mildew is combatted with nettle, oidium with horsetail & root rot with snakes (who prey on root-eating rats). The Schnabels are at the pinnacle of natural winemaking, and every wine since 2007 has been free from added sulphites. But enough about the wine – THE BRANDY!! Karl distilled a little Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir in 2004, ’05 and ’07 (80% Pinot total). The barrel bung came out after 11 years, in 2018, resulting in ‘a palate-staining, conversation-stopping work of art’ (to quote importer Cam Burton). Pour yourself a glass and contemplate existence.
