Jazz pianist turned vigneron Nicolas Reau has been making wine near the village of Sainte Radogone in Anjou since 2002. In addition to tending his own vineyard, Reau also buys fruit from the neighbouring property, both of which he has converted to organics.

This 100% Chenin Blanc, from a vineyard that’s in the process of converting to organic, evokes flavors of tart green apple and ripe stone fruits with subtle notes of honeysuckle, cardamom and vanilla, although it sees no new oak. Fermentation begins in tank with indigenous yeast then finishes in used oak on its lees where it is left for an additional six months. The name is a play on the French ”Beware of Dog” sign, “Attention Chien Mechant” but fear not, this wine is all pleasure. The bright and balanced acidity with pronounced limestone minerality make this a perfect pairing with a soft, stinky cheese and charcuterie board.
