The variety for which they are best known, presented in a way that celebrates everything they are about. This year the wine was directly pressed, but slowly, and, unusually for this cuvee, aged partly in concrete tanks and partly in stainless steel for 6 months before bottling. (It is usually aged in wooden barrels.) The result is a crisp, clean, slightly oxidative wine, in the way that good fino flirts, that lingers on the palate. Not only this, as it ages, it gets more of that generous huggability that Chenin rewards those who wait with. We feel like it’s been a while since we’ve seen the wondrous wines of Domaine Mosse, so we are glad to welcome them back. There’s something about them that feels very aligned with Winona - their ethos, their fun. Domaine Mosse is based in the Loire Valley, a stalwart of organic viticulture, dedicated mostly to long-lived and life-changing expressions of Chenin Blanc. Agnès and René Mosse, have had a dramatic influence on other winemakers who’d worked with them to gain experience and then started making their own wines. Their two sons Sylvestre and Joseph have worked alongside Agnès and René every vintage, and now they run the show. Producing wines of exceptional purity and flavour while maintaining the high standards set by their parents and taking the wines in a direction that certainly feels progressive and purposeful.
