Momento Mori - 2020 Fistful of Flowers

New Zealander Dane Johns started his career in wine working for Bill Downie in Gippsland, later discovering a slew of organic growers working with Italian varieties. Fiano, Moscato Giallo and Nero d'Avola are some of the heavy hitters in the region. Small ferments, wild yeast, no new oak, no mechanical pumps, no fining, no filtration, no additions.

Though the entirety of the Momento Mori portfolio has attained cult status, the Fistful of Flowers has a particular notoriety that echoes some cult-ish imports – Cantina Giardino, Radikon, Birbo, to name a few. This release is a stunner. Moscato Giallo and Vermentino grown by the Chalmers family on the slopes of Mt Camel in Heathcote, Victoria. Huge florals, a whirlwind of marigold, pear blossoms, magnolia, cherry tree. Washed with stone fruit, apricots, cut plums – complemented by native muntries. Cool, slatey, steely, salty.

Dane calls this his "wine for the people". If you're a person, you know what to do...
