The Lou Blanc cuvée is made in the “‘ouillé’” style, topping up consistently during maturation so the wine does not oxidise. The fruit, a variant of Chardonnay known as Melon le Queue Rouge, which looks like a peachy, lemon rich biscuit somewhere between Chardonnay and Savignin. It is his white suited for earlier drinking, next to the others it’s brilliant to see Gahier’s diversity in his winemaking. Like most of the Jura icons we love to stock here in the shop, Michel Gahier is a purist - a champion of old school Jura winemaking and sustainable viticulture. Jura wines really are a sensory whirlwind of place, presence and time. Michel lives in the centre of the village of Montigny-les-Arsures, near the central town of Arbois. It’s widely accepted that Montigny is regarded as the finest terroir for the Trousseau grape in the Jura, making Michel’s reds a must drink. The whites have a freshness to them, they are not made oxidatively but they glitter with that Jura mountain glow. Like looking at a snow capped mountain in the distance, the sun just coming up over it.
