Mendall - 2018 Terme de Guiu La Plana
A nose of citrus, spice and all things nice beckon you into the glass, where you’re met with a vivacious bounty of preserved lemon, herbs and a moreish bitterness. Grips your tongue and doesn’t let go. The prettiest light peach hue. 100% Macabeo from a young vineyard on Laureano’s highest plain in the Terra Alta. Wild fermentation in cuve then gradually racked off to a 200L amphora for a few months of élevage. Wow, this wine is just wow.
Based in the hot, dusty little town of El Pinell de Brai, the legendary Laureano Serres is a hugely influential pioneer of natural wines in Spain. He farms 6ha organically (working with organic fruit since the very beginning; 1999), and hasn’t touched sulphur since 2002. In his small cellar, wnes are made naturally in all manner of vessels. Fruity fact: Laureano is a co-founder of the iconic ‘Brutal Wine Corporation’ (thanks to the mis-translation of ‘brutal’ from Catalunyan to French).
