Matthieu Barret - 2019 Vilain Syrah
From legendary French winemaker Matthieu Barret, a 7th generation vigneron of Domaine de Coulet in Cornas. Matthieu's winemaking evolution has been one of increasing purity, beginning with his first vintage in 2000 employing organic viticulture. In 2012 he stopped using machines altogether, replacing them with mules, horses, humans and hands. He also created ‘green spaces’ around the farm, digging watering holes to nourish the ecosystem.
'Vilain' is 100% Syrah from organic vines – half sourced from Emmanuel Tracol in Roussas, and the other half from and Florent Bacconnier in Eclassan (two vignerons in their first year of operation). Fruit was carefully hand harvested – quite early – destemmed by hand, wild fermented and matured for 9 months in cement (to preserve the fruit purity). Tart red berries and sweet spices tickle your nose, with a crisp and fluid palate that embraces you with a vinous bear hug.
