The 2018 Barolo vintage was not an easy one. Perilously wet, making work in the vineyard a dance between disease and erosion. Then, as it just began to clear, huge amounts of hail in August and inclement weather towards the end of September. The result was arguably Barolo’s most variable and inconsistent vintage in recent memory. That said, Massolino somehow dug out triumph. Instead of bottling the normal range of five outstanding Barolo wines, the estate has released only one, declassifying all of the cru wines into the Barolo Classico. Here it is. Massolino supporters, here you have your phoenix. Founded in 1896, the Massolino family owns 23 hectares of (mostly) remarkable Serralunga vineyards, including primo parcels of such famous sites as; Margheria, Parafada and the legendary Vigna Rionda. The wines from Serralunga are globally prized, they are so wonderfully complex and concentrated, dance with minerals and iron, age for decades. For someone looking to explore Barolo, or simply indulge in some of the greats, the wines of Massolino sit comfortably among the best in the region. Strumming the line between classic and modern, they are ultimately timeless.
