Masseria Del Pino - 2019 Caravan Petrol
Caravan petrol never tasted so good!
Masseria del Pino embodies Mount Etna in all its pastoral purity. On the volcano's northern face sits this tiny biodynamic farm owned by ex-aeroplane pilot Cesare Fulvio and ex-archery instructor Federica Turillo. The duo renovated the property’s ancient palmento in 2005 and began to work the 120-year-old pre-phylloxera vines. Organic olive trees, chestnut, oak & cherry trees surround the vineyard, as well as vegetable gardens, sheep, chickens, geese... Yep, it's basically Eden.
Their 2019 Bianco comprises Carricante, Catarratto, Minella and Pizzutella. Lightly skin-macerated, the grapes were pressed manually before wild fermentation and maturation took place in a solitary 500L chestnut cask for 9 months. Bottled unfiltered and unsulfured. Cloudy golden in hue, it’s a charming wine that embraces you with an offering of wildflowers, exotic spices, lemon, nuts, saffron and pear. Textural strokes of salinity and minerality leave you clambering for more. One can imagine that this is what wine tasted like when vines first appeared in Contrada Pino in the 9th century – pure and painterly, picturing Etna in all its raw glory.
PS. ‘Caravan Petrol’ refers to those newcomers to Etna who purchase and bulldoze land for vineyards in an effort to profit off the region's popularity.
