Lulu Vigneron - 2017 BB1
Straight outta Jura! Ludwig 'Lulu' Bindernagel and Nathalie Eigenschenck are driven by the motto 'wine is made in the vineyard', farming their vines organically, without insecticides, chemical fertilisers or machinery. The marly, calcareous soil is super unique; rich in fossilised oysters. Everything is done by hand, and fermentations take place at really low temperatures, lengthening the process for up to two years (!) to create insane complexity. Total production never exceeds 1,500 bottles per vintage.
Lulu's 2017 BB1 – or 'Bebe One' – is the first cuvee made under the Lulu label. It'ss 80% Chardonnay and 20% Savagnin from southern exposed sited in Poligny and Arlay. The wine is matured in old barrels for 17 months, with barrels topped the whole time – the 'ouille' style of Jura. With hints of menthol and acacia flowers on the nose, this is a beautiful dry drop weaving together crisp threads of white flowers, honey, stewed citrus fruits and minerals. An iodine and saline twist leads into gentle bitters on the finish. What a journey.
