Avanti Popolo is one of those wines that successfully straddles its litheness and brightness with an underlying strength. Named after a Italian cry of ‘Forward People’ - that became the slogan of the Italian labour movement. Carignan and Grenache, juicier than previous vintages and a deeper shade of red - concentrated flavour from low yielding, very old vines. Axel Prüfer was born and raised in East Germany but moved to France as a young man to take up a career in wine making. Based in the mountains behind Beziers he has been described as a ‘darling of the natural wine bar movement’. He is a quiet, thoughtful and engaging young winemaker who is totally committed to producing non-interventionist wines. Sue and Roger, his distributors, were charmed equally by him as by his wines, recalling “every sentence he utters is the result of deep thought.”
