2018 Serpent a Plumes
Cahors from the Causses, baby. Domaine La Calmette is one of the most exciting domaines in Cahors. On the the plateau (or causses as they're called locally), Maya and Nicolas craft wines via exceptional biodynamic viticulture, lighter extraction and natural vinification, abandoning the hard tannins that this appellation is so infamous for. The bedrock of the causses is Kimmeridgian – same as Chablis – leading to wines of phenomenal minerality, acidity and energy.
Their 2018 Serpent a Plumes is Côt (Malbec) and some Merlot, partly whole-cluster pressed, gravity transferred to tank and co-vinified with indigenous yeasts before being aged for about 12 months on lees in concrete tank. Cheerful and crunchy, it's a wildly pure expression of fruit, singing songs of plum, blueberry, blackberry and violet. Ripe and thirst-quenching, with a herbaceous circumference and thick, gothic texture. Such a high stamina red, it'll pump you with energy. This is not your dad’s Cahors.
