2016 Conero Riserva
Made from Montepulciano and grown on rich sandstone, this wine is a beauty. Round tannins are balanced with plush, jovial red fruit. There’s the faint whiff of broken terracotta, cool air, stewed cherries, tree bark. If there were ever a wine for a big hunk of bistecca, it was this one. La Calcinara is located in Contrada Calcinara in Candia, in the city of Ancona, and the 12 hectares of vineyards and 3 hectares of olive groves are looked after organically. Here the ground is white and strongly calcareous, with clay and sandstone rich in marine fossils. They are part of a commune of twenty growers that are dedicated to making Rosso Conero, the prestigious red wine of the Marche D.O.C.
