Joshua Cooper - 2017 Old Port Righ Chardonnay
It seems that everything young winemaking wizard Josh Cooper touches turns to gold. Having spent his life watching his parents drive organic and biodynamic grape growing in Australia, Josh sources top quality fruit from central and western Victoria, crafting nuanced potions that balance beautifully between classic and contemporary.
This cool climate Chardy from the old Port Righ vineyard in Macedon Ranges was gently hand picked in the cool morning, gently hand sorted, gently pressed for 5 hours and gently sent to aged Burgundian oak to mature for 12 months on lees (no stirring, no racking), before being gently transferred to stainless steel for a further six months élevage. Gentle does it. The result? Elegant, ethereal, expressive. Aromas of crushed stone and snuffed match with jasmine, citrus and wild mint pave the way for a palate that's textural and taught, relaxing into itself as the wine opens up – a slowly unfurling embrace. This is the the kind of wine that etches into your tastebuds such that its memory stays with you long after the last drop.
