Gut Oggau - 2018 Theodora
Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe run a 14ha biodynamic estate in Burgenland, crafting distinctive single plot wines from native varietals. Each potion is separated by personality, their labels forming a flavourous fictional family tree. Theodora is from the third generation and she’s forthright, charming, bold and vivacious. She’s a blend of Gruner Veltliner and Welschriesling growing on gravel and limestone. Two thirds of the grapes are destemmed and crushed into aged barrels to ferment and mature for nine months without batonnage. One third of the grapes are wild fermented on skins for a short period of time. The wine captures a small amount of CO2 at bottling, which keeps it fresh and gives it a little effervescence. It's unfined, unfiltered, and has no added sulphur.
Theodora is more serious than her siblings; contemplative and intellectual with depth and contour – yet not without a little funk and sass. Dry and full, she's an ideal companion to delicate dishes; or ravishing on her own. Cult stuff, this is.
