Gut Oggau - 2018 Maskerade Rot 1L
Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe run a 14ha biodynamic estate in Burgenland, crafting distinctive single plot wines from native varietals. Each potion is separated by personality, their labels forming a flavourous fictional family tree. Gut Oggau have become one the most sought after, cult-status wines in Austria.
The duo acquired some new vineyards last year and are working tirelessly to convert them to biodynamics. Until then, they don’t believe the wines will show quite the same depth of personality, so they’ve kept the characters on the labels masked, and bottled in 1L bottles for early consumption. The Maskerade Rot is a 30-year-old hilltop vineyard on slate and limestone soil. It is mostly a blend of Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt with a few others thrown in. Grapes are hand harvested and hand destemmed, then wild fermented in used 3000L barrels. The wine goes through elevage in the same barrels for about 8 months, with no batonnage, before being bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with zero added sulphur. This is the kind of wine you need at your dinner table, always.
