Grape Republic - 2019 Anfora Ariancioni

Founded in 2015 by restaurateur and sommelier Kazuomi Fujimaki, Grape Republic is built on three simple rules: the cultivation must be organic, the wines must be made without sulphur and other additives, and they should preferably have a touch of amphora storage. Kazuomi's goal was to craft living Japanese wines that freely captured the essence of Yamagata. Today, Grape Republic is run by Haruyuki Yano with New Zealand's own Alex Craighead (of Don/Kindeli) involved as a partner and mentor.

Their 2019 Anfora Ariancioni is crafted with Delaware, Niagara, Rosario Bianco, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris sourced from Yamagata. It brings together de-stemmed Delaware fermented on skin for 8 days, whole bunch co-ferment of Niagara, Rosario Bianco, Gewurtztraminer and Pinot Gris, and home vineyard Delaware fermented on skin for 14 days. All of fermentations and ageing took place in amphora. This is a unique orange wine with a pleasant astringency, tightly packed fruit and amphora-derived umami. Even better day two!
