Gentle Folk - 2020 Village Chardonnay
At the top of one of the most notorious driveways in the Basket Range is the home and winery of Gareth and Rainbo Belton; Gentle Folk. The two met whilst fast becoming the leading experts in microbiology and seaweed, but caught the wine bug hard and thenceforth could do nothing else. Their winery is peaceful, charming and warm, and the pair are incredibly kind and gracious. The vineyards reflect this too – in conversion to biodynamics, they are full of energy, vivacity, life. They farm everything themselves, and are quickly acquiring more as they go.
This extremely limited Chardy benefits from the blessings of three top-notch vineyards: the acidity of Carey Gully, the generosity of Piccadilly and the perfume of Ashton (all organically farmed, of course). The fruit is 100% whole cluster pressed and settled in tank overnight. Racked to a mix of French and Austrian barriques, puncheons and foudres (15% new wood) for nine months. This is a refined and complex Adelaide Hills Chardonnay, balancing acidity and ripeness and chiseled with moreish salivation. Super clean on the palate with smoky, reductive mineral note that soften to a creamy hug with some air. Develops even more over a day or more – but who are we kidding; it won't last this long.
