Ferdinando Principiano - 2015 Serralunga Barolo

Meet Ferdinando Principiano, a traditional Barolista who is thoughtful instead of dogmatic about making natural yet elegant Dolcetto and Barolo (and a few other native Piemonte varieties). Ferdinando began his conversion to natural winemaking in 2003, and nowadays his vineyards teem with wild flowers; a wild and thick leaf canopy shades the grape clusters; early-picking tightens the acidity and lowers the alcohol. Whole clusters are trammelled by foot and wild fermented without sulphur.

His Barolo Serralunga comes from a tiny 3.5 hectare area of Ferdinando’s youngest Nebbiolo vines (about 25 years old), in the valley of Boscareto, in the Serralunga d’Alba subzone of Barolo. Hand selected fruit in early October, natural fermentation with no added sulphur, and 24 months in large Slavonic oak casks before being bottled and aged for 1 year. A captivating earthy aroma floats from the glass, echoed on the palate with mushrooms, forest floor, pine, black cherry, wild strawberry, mint, and orange zest. A super suave Barolo with buoyancy and energy, acidity and soft ripe tannins. Such an elegant natural wine with a watermark of traditional Barolo terroir, built to age for years to come yet can very easily be enjoyed right this second (with some decanting).
