Fabio Gea, a former geologist, farms and makes wine with just 1ha of vines inherited from his grandfather. Tending his vineyard naturally – co-planting with fruit trees and treating with plant-based remedies – and using self-designed porcelain vessels, earthenware and stoneware in the cellar, Fabio’s practices are a stark contrast to the intensive vine growing and over-oaking dominating the Barbaresco area of Piemonte.
This rustic, structural Barbera lassoes your nose with a bright perfume of berry jam, spice, bay leaf and fresh dark forest fruit. Ripe red fruits, aniseed and ash crash over the palate, with whispers of balsamic and salty, dark minerality. Strong acidity holds everything in a tight embrace. The wine was wild fermented in barrel and aged in stoneware, before being bottled and labelled with handmade paper and numbered in pencil.
