Fabien Jouves - 2019 You Fu@k My Wine Rouge
When a young Fabien Jouves was contemplating leaving his quiet village of Trespoux-Rassiels to study medicine, his parents told him they would sell off the family vineyards. So, Fabien decided to study viticulture in Bordeaux instead, and in 2004 he began converting his family vineyards to organic farming. Shortly after, he pushed further into biodynamics, and today all plots are farmed biodynamically and all fruit is vinified naturally, without any additives. He may not have chosen medicine, but he did choose medicine for the soul :)
The fruit in Fabien's 2019 'You F*ck My Wine' comes from a single, tiny 0.5 hectare plot located on a hill 350 metres above sea level with calcareous soils. The vines are 50 years old on average and they produce very few grapes – but they are incredibly structured and balanced. The fruit is hand harvested and vatted whole in a cement tank and in barrels, macerating with the skins for 7 days. It then matures in the same tanks for about 6 months, and is bottled without filtering or clarifying; or any additives. Super limited production – only about 3,000 bottles are made per vintage. It's a fun, friendly rouge replete with refreshing red fruits – raspberry, sour cherry, cranberry. Takes you on a stroll through a riverside landscape sewn with wild Mediterranean herbs and freshly watered earth. There's an echo of orange peel in there somewhere, too, and a dusting of whit pepper. Really fun, not too funky. It's wildly pure, pulsating with personality and place. Good with food, good without! Good at room temp, good chilled!
