An important historical variety that lost its way, has some fresh life breathed into it. Dry but soft, delicate tannins, cherries and blackberries. Medium-bodied, easy drinking to be appreciated in the summer months, served a little chilled. One of the region's most important and influential winemakers. Elio Altare and his pioneering efforts in changing production methods to gain a more expressive and approachable style of Barolo inspired a generation of producers to follow suit and, it must be said, the results have been a huge positive for the region and its wines in general. His daughter Silvia now runs the estate and makes the wine (Altare himself has moved on to a projects on the Cinque Terre and in the hills making Castelmagno cheese) and as the new, overachieving guard is wont to do, the wines speak better (or perhaps are just telling a different story) than her fathers.
