Derain - 2016 Saint Aubin Le Ban
Domaine Derain has been certified biodynamic since 1989(!). Beginning his career as a barrel maker, Dominique Derain purchased 5.5ha of vines in Saint Aubin & began making wine in ‘88. Today, the domaine traverses several Burgundian appellations and is now owned by Julien Altaber and Carole Schwab of Domaine Sextant. The Saint-Aubin appellation is one of Burgundy’s hidden secrets, because the vineyards border those of the premier crus of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet without commanding the lofty dollars.
‘Le Ban’ (2016) is an iconic vintage from the original Saint-Aubin site, made with fruit from vines planted in 1920. It’s an affectionate Pinot Noir brimming with juicy red fruits – strawberry, raspberry, cherry – with a heart of acid and ribcage of spice. Complex yet ultra-drinkable, its expressive palate paints an evolving portrait as the wine breathes. This wine shows just how good wines can be from the underrated appellation of Saint-Aubin.
