Greg Grigoriou makes minimal intervention wines from Southern Italian grape varieties growing in the Riverland, suited to the region’s dry Mediterranean climate. He sources fruit from trusted growers – many of whom he has known his whole life – who work organically. His new 'Hell Series' is all about experimentation, pushing varietals off the edge of expectation. This potion is 50% Montepulciano, 50% Nero d’Avola grown on red sandy loam over limestone from the Basshams' organic vineyard in Barmera, Riverland, all hand picked on the same day. Half of each variety was destemmed and macerated, the other half left as whole clusters, put back together and allowed to naturally co-ferment for 12 days on skins. The wine was then pressed to seasoned French oak, where it rested on solids for nearly a year. Racked and bottled with a small addition of sulphur. A little wild; a lot smashable.
"Negroamaro is the bitter black grape of Calabria, its earthiness, savoury bitter character really excites me. Picked early and treated simply, the fruit was handpicked and destemmed into one tonne open fermenters. Gentle hand plunging, post primary ferment the wine was pressed off to old oak for malo and maturation for about 8 months. Racked, and a touch of SO2 added, we then blended in a small amount of Montepulciano and Lagrein to give a faintly meaty backbone and tannin.
This wine is very much in that light, splashy, natty style red vibe – but with more depth, savouriness and interest. The Negroamaro has a very earthy, forest floor feel, the fruitiness restrained by a herbal, aniseed note that is moreish and delicious. A faint lick of tannin and a sharp acidity throughout give length – served chilled, or not, it’s up to you!$2 from every bottle sold via the online store will be donated to charities that provide support to victims of domestic violence." - Producer Notes
