2020 Pinot Gris
Your new favourite orange (/pinky) wine. You've been warned.
Pinot Gris from Robert Surmann’s farm just outside of Hahndorf. The vines are 25 years old and grown organically on black sandy soil atop petrified schist. Aaron played with two ferments: one in a barrel standing up containing 100% destemmed fruit, and the other in Aussie terracotta, which had 30% whole bunches and 70% destemmed fruit. Left on skins for two and a half weeks and then pressed into a 500L barrel, racked once and bottled. Blush in hue, it flows with ripe tropical fruits spliced with agile acidity and a kind-of-savoury back palate. More textural than a boucherouite rug; chewier than a Fantale, slicker than Pulp Fiction.
