Nebbiolo takes centre stage whilst supported by a chorus of local varieties. This is Nebb with a shot of adrenalin straight to the heart. Smashy red cherries, garlands of sage and mint, wet roads in the rain leading up into the clouds. Fruit is aged for 12 months in oak before being bottled. Lip smacking. Barbacan are the keepers of one of the more joyous wine-related Instagrams out there, full of choreographed dances, incredibly steep, rugged vistas (to match the rugged good looks) and just a general joie de vivre. They also make magnificent wine. Angelo Sega and his sons Matteo and Luca are based in the Valtellina Alps of Lombardy, where their seven hectares of vines are dedicated to the famed Nebbiolo, and the less famed but equally impressive Rossola, Rossolino Rosa, Brugnola and Negrera. They consider themselves protectors of the region and its viticultural history.
