Made from 100% Chiavennasca, the local name for Nebbiolo which is harder, but prettier to say, which was matured in a mix of stainless steel and oak barriques. The name comes from the Rhaetian Alps, of which you can see from the vineyard. All at once dizzying with perfume, delicacy and power, like a ballerina en pointe. Bright redcurrant and goji, kampot pepper and mint. Swift and delish. Barbacan are the keepers of one of the more joyous wine-related Instagrams out there, full of choreographed dances, incredibly steep, rugged vistas (to match the rugged good looks) and just a general joie de vivre. They also make magnificent wine. Angelo Sega and his sons Matteo and Luca are based in the Valtellina Alps of Lombardy, where their seven hectares of vines are dedicated to the famed Nebbiolo, and the less famed but equally impressive Rossola, Rossolino Rosa, Brugnola and Negrera. They consider themselves protectors of the region and its viticultural history.
